Friday, February 28th: Introduction to Caribbean Steel Drum
“The Caribbean Steelpan: making music from oil drums”
The steelpan is Trinidad and Tobago’s national instrument with origins steeped in history and human ingenuity. It is recognized as one of the only major acoustic musical instruments created in the 20th century. Two Norwich members of the Panhandlers Steel Band will lead a multimedia talk about the steelpan (using live music, videos, audio clips and a hands-on-pan opportunity). They will trace its origins and development from the 1700’s through the 1930’s & 40’s, when pioneers and innovators (fueled by wartime-discarded 55 gallon drums) continued to transform the pan into the legitimate musical instrument which flourishes today.
