September Events at NPL

Join us for a month of fun and educational programming.

On Display: Mathematicians Made Visible, by Tracy Gillespie

Mathematicians Made Visible is a series of block print and watercolor portraits of contemporary mathematicians created to celebrate diversity in modern mathematicians. For years math textbooks have been filled with the images and stories of only one type of mathematician, perpetuating the idea that there is only one way for a mathematician to look. It’s time to expand upon that narrative and broaden our visual vocabulary by seeing the images and speaking about the work of the variety of mathematicians creating today’s mathematics.

Tracy Gillespie is a middle school math teacher and block print artist from South Strafford, Vermont. Through her work she hopes to spark creativity and celebrate beauty. You can learn more by visiting her website at www.kitchentableprinter.com.

The fall’s theme is “Portraits of the Artists.” These books feature fictional interpretations of famous artists. What happens when the visual arts and the literary arts meet? How do fiction writers interpret the lives of famous painters, and the canvases they leave behind?
